Morning Workshops: July 19, 2011

9am-12pm

Workshop A: GDCON Workshop C: CLOUD
Optimizing the Hybrid Enterprise Data Center
IT organizations are being constantly squeezed by seemingly incompatible objectives… improve operating efficiencies, embrace cloud computing and while continuing to assure application level QoS to the entire computing environment.

What quickly becomes clear is that conventional views of the data center represented by physical space, critical infrastructure and IT gear is no longer an effective view of the enterprise computing environment. With the adoption of virtualization, SaaS and cloud computing, there has been a transformation to a hybrid computing model that presents both opportunities and challenges to the IT organization.

In this workshop, we will cover:

• The emergence of the hybrid enterprise data center (mixture of conventional, virtual, SaaS and cloud)
• Practical and transparent ways to improve efficiency and extend the life of your physical data center environment
• Considerations for leveraging SaaS and cloud deployments where it is compatible with the business requirements
• A “cost of computing” framework to evaluate the true cost of hybrid computing alternatives

Cloud U:

Whether you are contemplating a phased push towards cloud technologies, or a full force overhaul of you IT structure, the preliminary question remains. How do I make the move? Several questions are left unanswered and IT managers are left searching for service providers to fill in the void left by this new technology. Within the Cloud U session, workshop facilitators will discuss many of the overarching aspects that need to addressed before during and after making a shift to cloud computing and will analyze the advantages the cloud brings to your business. No matter the size of your organization this session will help you better understand the definition and use case of cloud computing.

Energy Efficiency in the Data Center: Rebates, Retrofits, and Reforms
Markley Group’s premier data center, One Summer Street, is the most significant data center and telecommunications facility in the New England Region and boasts 100% uptime in its twelve year operating history.

In this interactive case study workshop on July 19th, we bring you the techniques Markley Group uses to ensure their data center is “green” and operating efficiently. Markley Group data center experts plan to discuss the energy rebate process with local utility companies and the benefits (and costs) of using PUE as a measure. The workshop will also explore how on-going physical equipment improvements and upgrades result in decreased energy consumption and improved efficiency.
